First EngageUCLan forum

So this week we held our first informal, drop-in discussion forum around public and community engagement, which was so well attended we ran out of seats- fantastic. Great to see that UCLan is engaged with the idea of engagement 🙂

Fuelled by coffee, rocky road cake and mini gingerbread men, the forum generated some super new ideas and interesting and provocative feedback on EngageUCLan’s plans for implementing the Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research. We even managed to match make some ideas with skills on the ‘lonely hearts board’. Move over Cilla (now I’m showing my age).

Dr Smith and Dr Snape impress with 'dragon's breath'

Our end of term chemistry spectacular, AbraChemDabra, was a great success with over 700 primary school schildren joining in the fun, helping ‘create’ a star, turn water into milk and back again, and produce toothpaste for elephants…Teachers were provided with a resource pack to build on the chemistry experienced and to conduct their own chemical magic in the classroom. Next show: June 2011

Ogden Trust Lancashire Young Physicist of the Year

Tonight we’re celebrating the achievements of Year 12 students from across Lancashire who have been nominated as the top Physicist in their school.

They’ll be treated to a nice buffet (including cakes), be entertained by some science busking, chat to some of our physics researchers, enjoy a lecture from Dr Robert Walsh on Solar Astrophysics and go home with a certificate and a book token and something great to add to their CV.

Looking forward to it and hoping the weather doesn’t disrupt things too much
